Money Launderer Released Early
Former Louisiana state senator Derrick Shepherd has been released into a halfway house after serving most of a 37 month sentence for money laundering.
Shepherd plead guilty to money laundering charges after helping an unlicensed bond broker launder $141,000 from the sale of bogus bonds.
Shepherd worked as a lawyer prior to his conviction, and the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board has recommended that he be disbarred. He was discharged from the Army Reserve, where he was an attorney, and he was fined $45,000.
He made attempts at gaining an early release from prison, and his initial release date was September 2012. It has not known why he was released early, but time off for good behavior is a probably reason.
